Speed Reading

How to read at lightning speed!

If you're like me, and you think that knowledge is absolute power, you probably have more things on your to-read list than you'll ever be able to get through. We live in an information age and it is impossible to stay current without being buried with information you'll never get through (in a timely "current" manor). I believe Warren Buffet and Bill Gates were once asked which superpower they would want, and both agreed that they'd want to be able to read faster!

Learning to speed read is actually quite easy. It all comes down to:

Eliminating the voice in your head whilst reading.

Look at the words, don't read them.

Try reading (looking at) the paragraph below without "voicing" each word in your mind. Use your eyes to quickly glance through each word and don't give your "inner voice" the chance to verbalise them in your mind.

“The first thing you need to do is eliminate the voice inside your head. Read with your eyes. ONLY. Whatever you do don’t use the voice inside your head. As you learn to do this part go ahead and read word by word and go over the lines with your finger. Just work on eliminating the voice. Why? You cannot say words nearly as fast as you can comprehend them … Since you’re reading with your eyes, try reading two or three words at a time, and then move up once you get comfortable.”

How'd you go? Pretty quick right? Sure, this method is probably not the best if you want to have  it committed to your memory in a deeper state. I believe it is only good for getting through text extremely quickly, and only if you decide that its contents is important, you can give it a second, slower pass.

That being said, if you're a student, don't use this method to study for your exams...
