Photography is definitely a discipline that is (usually) easier to teach by showing rather than telling. AdoramaTV has done just that and made a pretty straight forward video tutorial explaining the practical differences in shooting with different focal lengths - wide and long.

Focal lengths effect more than just how far or close you have to stand to get your shot. You often hear photographers talk about longer focal lengths "compressing" the subject and backgrounds of the image and the wider focal lengths doing the opposite. This video demonstrates what that actually means visually.
